Writing for Children and Young Adults

Writing for Children and Young Adults

The Writing School is based in Oxford, the home of Lewis Carroll, CS Lewis, JRR Tolkien and Philip Pullman. We believe that children’s literature is one of the most enjoyable forms of writing. And – who knows – you could be the next JK Rowling! Writing for children allows you to dream up a magical world filled with exciting plots and odd characters. The stories children consume awaken their imaginations, encourage them to expand their minds and learn more about the world around them.

The demand for exciting new children’s writers is bigger than ever, and we can show you how to make your way in this market. Our course teaches you how to make the best of your talents. You’ll also learn how to aim at the growing fields of radio, theatre and television for young audiences.

The Writing School’s course in Writing for Children and Young Adults will help you unlock your inner child and produce stories (or other sorts of writing) which children will want to read and come back to. Some people assume that writing for children is much easier than writing for adults. On the contrary, writing for young people is every bit as challenging and rewarding as writing for adults.  There are many accomplished authors who can write for adults but have no aptitude for writing for children, and vice versa, although there are certainly some who can write effectively for both audiences. Our Writing for Children and Young Adults will help you judge whether this is your true vocation and find an audience for your work.

You will learn to target your work at a very specific age-group. The kinds of writing that will appeal to a five-year-old are not the same sorts of writing that will appeal to a ten-year-old. You will learn to develop a very clear sense of your target audience and what will give them pleasure. Are they boys or girls, or both? Where do they live? What do they like doing? All these questions will be very relevant as you develop your own voice and create your own stories.

Your tutor is there to help you every inch of the way. One of the things which distinguishes the Writing School’s course in Writing for Children is just how much time you will spend working on a one-to-one basis with a tutor. You will have the opportunity to tackle fifteen tutor-marked assignments, each of them substantial pieces of work, and your tutor will comment in detail on everything your produce. Once you have discovered exactly which sort of writing for children is your own special interest, there will be the chance to tailor the assignments to suit your own developing skills and even to submit drafts of work in progress.

The Writing School tutors will do everything they can to bring out your latent talent and set you on the road to commercial success. You may not be the next J.K. Rowling but there is a chance to achieve success in your own way and perhaps one day you too will entertain thousands of children with your own unique vision and writing skill.
